Christmas Fayre
Nepalis love a good party!
For the Hindu community, the number of religious holidays are as multitudinous as the number of deities. In November, Tihar celebrations (think festival of light) include lights inside and outside the home, street dancing and pujas (devotions) to various manifestations of the god of death, Yama. Certain auspicious days include the worship of ravens, crows and dogs (!), whilst day three of the festival includes a special puja to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Otherwise dark houses are lit up like Christmas-trees to encourage the goddess to enter.
For the Christian community in Nepal, Christmas is the time to welcome the arrival of the Saviour Jesus. Cue the Christmas mela (outdoor fayre)!
Black Kite Coffee attended the Abundant Life Church Christmas mela this year, to try out making coffees on the go. In addition to enjoying the live music and crowds, the mela gave us the opportunity to connect with the significant Christian community in Pokhara. It also gave us insight into the effort required to move our operation to a stall!
Meanwhile in the cafe, to raise our profile, we decided to go for an opening 30% discount offer until mid-January. Whilst this is a short-term risk, our daily sales and income continue to climb, despite the discount.
Happy new year from Black Kite!
