The Female Touch

One of the core goals of Black Kite Coffee is to empower women in Nepal.

To the foreigner, Nepali society is a complex and confusing mix of ethnicities and caste. Not only so, but, as a traditional society, Nepal is also a strong patriarchy. Whilst society is quickly changing as western values (some good and some not so!) stream into phones via social media, many groups continue to face discrimination and are exposed to fewer opportunities; women in particular can sometimes be particularly vulnerable.

It is with this in mind that Varsha’s vision for Black Kite Coffee was born. Her first goal was to provide access to education for poorer families surrounding New Chandi Kalika School in Syangja district, a two hour bus ride from Pokhara. Knowing well the obstacles that women face in Nepal, Varsha’s concern is also to empower those women who may face particularly difficult circumstances. In Nepal, low caste level, poverty and caring for sick family members are common concerns. Divorce or the death of a spouse can also place women in particularly vulnerable positions, as is the case for young women and girls in the care system.

Earlier in January, we were particularly blessed to be helped by two female students: Hannah from Australia and Katrina from Norway. Excited by Varsha’s vision, they spent a day helping us develop our social media content. Their energy and enthusiasm, together with Gen-Z familiarity with social media trends and tips, gave us much encouragement. Thanks guys!

Meanwhile, on the coffee-front, our new precision roasting thermometers are installed and our roasts ready to analyse. More next time..
