Consistency is Key
Selling delicious, Arabica coffee from the Nepali Himalayas, is our core business at Black Kite. Ultimately however, our goal is to participate in a much larger business, one that a mysterious carpenter from Galilee called ‘the Kingdom of God.’
“How can roasting and selling coffee be part of this ‘Kingdom’?” you might reasonably ask. Perhaps another question will help:
“What might the ‘reconciliation of all things’ actually mean?” as suggested by the apostle Paul.
The gospel accounts are full of ‘reconciliation’ stories: a reformed tax collector reconciled to his debtors; a young couple at their wedding, spared the shame of running out of wine; a condemned woman offered healing and inclusion; blind people seeing again; the possessed set-free, hungry crowds fed and even promises to end our hunger and thirst for relationship and meaning!
Could it be that the same Creator who welcomes us with a healing embrace wants to go even further and do something about the ‘groaning’ of creation itself, including our work and business? Could we, as coffee roasters, be part of this Kingdom?
Back to the day to day business of roasting and selling coffee.
Here at Black Kite, we are convinced that creating the best tasting product that we can, is somehow, mysteriously, part of the Now and Future restoration of all things. To that end, our journey as coffee roasters now includes a roaster, equipped with two sensors, that provide real-time temperature changes during the roast. The resulting ‘bean temperature’ and ‘rate-of-rise’ curves, help us better control both the roasting process and levels of consistency. One key is to reduce the rate of bean-temperature rise beyond ‘first-crack,’ when internal heat is released from inside the bean (think popcorn in a microwave).
As for how we might do more than just provide people with a great morning coffee, keep reading our unfolding story…
