A Happy-Sad Farewell

Libby and Bruce have been long-termers in Nepal, having lived and worked here for the best part of 30 years! Bruce, or Doctor Bruce, was heavily involved in setting up and managing medical operations with international NGOs in Nepal whilst Libby, or Mrs Hayes, has been a teacher and headteacher in different contexts here.

In the 1980s, together with a growing family, Bruce and Libby were stationed in a remote village in central-east Nepal. Libby taught music in a local classroom and Bruce did what he could to provide basic care to the people there. Their children remember an idyllic childhood in the hills and forests of the Himalayan foothills, but the reality would have been a tough change from your typical Australian suburban lifestyle.

Varsha and her husband Jug, were happy to invite the Hayes’ for a Friday morning breakfast recently, Black Kite Coffee style! For us, it was a chance to practise making french crepes and coffee for our future customers. The basics of the coffee house are now in place and, with a few finishing flourishes, will be open for a ‘soft-launch’ very soon.
